Understanding Clinical Trials

Not sure what a clinical trial is or whether it’s right for you? We believe everyone deserves clear, honest information—no confusing medical jargon. Here’s what you need to know.

What Is a Clinical Trial?

A clinical trial is a carefully planned research study that tests a new medical treatment—such as a medication, therapy, or device—in real people to see if it is safe and works well.

Think of it this way: every medicine available today first went through clinical trials before doctors could prescribe it. By participating, you’re helping advance treatments that may help millions of people in the future—and you may benefit personally too.

Participation is always completely voluntary. You can ask questions at any time and leave the study at any point—no penalties, no pressure.

How Trials Are Structured: The 4 Phases

Clinical trials happen in stages called phases. Each one builds on the last, adding more people and answering bigger questions.

Phase 1
Is it safe?
Small group (20–80 people). Researchers check how the body handles the treatment and identify side effects.
Phase 2
Does it work?
Larger group (100–300). Tests whether the treatment actually helps and continues monitoring safety.
Phase 3
Is it better?
Large group (1,000+). Compares the new treatment to existing options. This phase leads to FDA approval.
Phase 4
Long-term tracking
After approval. Researchers track how the treatment works in millions of patients over many years.

What Happens During a Trial?

Each study is different, but most follow a similar process. Here’s what you can generally expect:

  • Pre-screening call — A friendly conversation to answer your questions and check basic eligibility over the phone.
  • Screening visit — A medical evaluation (at no cost) to confirm you’re a good fit for the study.
  • Study visits — Scheduled appointments for check-ins, assessments, or treatment. Day and evening times are available.
  • Completion & follow-up — After the last visit, the team checks in to see how you’re doing.

All of our studies are outpatient—no overnight stays required.

Your Rights & Safety

Clinical trials in the United States are held to strict safety and ethical standards. Here’s what protects you:

  • Informed consent — Before anything starts, you’ll receive a plain-language document explaining the study in full detail. You sign only when you fully understand and agree.
  • IRB oversight — Every trial must be approved and monitored by an Independent Review Board—an ethics committee of doctors, scientists, and community members.
  • Confidentiality — Your personal information and medical history are protected by state and federal law.
  • Freedom to leave — You can withdraw from the study at any time, for any reason, without any negative consequences to your care.

About Compensation

Some—but not all—clinical trials offer payment or reimbursement to participants. When compensation is available, it is meant to respect your time and cover expenses like travel or parking. It is never intended to pressure you into joining.

What compensation may include (when offered):

  • Reimbursement for travel, parking, or childcare
  • Payments for time spent at each visit
  • Free medical evaluations, lab work, and study-related care
📌

Compensation varies by study

Each study is different. Our team will clearly explain what, if any, compensation is available for a specific trial before you commit to anything. Always ask—we encourage it.

Why You Might Not Be Eligible

Every trial has specific rules about who can and cannot participate—these are called eligibility criteria. Think of them like a recipe: the study needs the right combination of participants to produce accurate, safe results.

Not qualifying does not mean anything is wrong. It simply means this particular study isn’t the right match right now. Common reasons include:

📅

Age range
Studies often need participants within a specific age window to keep results consistent.

💉

Specific diagnosis
The study may require a very precise medical diagnosis or symptom level.

💊

Current medications
Some medications can interfere with the treatment being studied.

🏥

Other health conditions
Certain health conditions could affect the study results or your safety.

Timing
How recently you were diagnosed, or how long you’ve had a condition, may matter.

📋

Prior treatments
You may have already tried a medication the study is testing against.

We’re here to help. If you don’t qualify for one study, our team will help you find another that may be a better fit.
